Early Years Curriculum

At Millfield, we have developed our Early Years Curriculum using the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage, alongside our school ethos, values and understanding of our children. Our aim is to provide every child with the very best start to their education, helping them to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to thrive.

Our curriculum is built around seven interconnected areas of learning and development. Each area is important in its own right, but they work together to support children’s learning and development as a whole.

Our Seven Areas of Learning and Development

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development – developing confidence, independence, friendships and an understanding of feelings and behaviour.
  • Physical Development – developing gross and fine motor skills, coordination, strength and healthy habits.
  • Communication and Language – developing listening, attention, understanding and speaking skills.
  • Literacy – developing a love of books, phonics, reading, writing and early literacy skills.
  • Numeracy – developing a strong understanding of numbers, counting, patterns, shapes, measures and mathematical thinking.
  • Understanding the World – exploring people, communities, nature, technology and the world around us.
  • Expressive Arts and Design – developing creativity through art, music, movement, role play, imagination and design.
  •

Through a balance of high-quality adult-led teaching, purposeful play and hands-on experiences, children are encouraged to be curious, creative and independent learners. We provide a rich and stimulating environment where children can build on what they already know, develop new skills and become excited about learning.

Reading in Reception

At Millfield we believe that reading is the single greatest joy that you can have and so texts feature heavily in everything that we do.

Children are encouraged to share a book every night. We endeavour to read with children as often as we can, whether this is hearing a child read, shared class reading, books used in literacy, the class story at the end of the day or even a trip down to our new library.

At Millfield, we don't teach children how to read, we create readers.

Books we have read this year in class:

To support your child reading at home here are some fabulous documents...

Uniform

We want every child to feel comfortable, happy and ready to learn throughout the school day. As our Early Years children have regular access to the outdoors, they may sometimes get messy, muddy or wet!

Please ensure your child has a spare change of clothes, clearly labelled with their name, in school at all times. These will be kept in their own personal box and can be changed as needed.

Swimming

Swimming takes place every Wednesday. Please make sure your child brings their swimming kit to school in the morning on swimming days.

Labelling

Please ensure that every item of clothing and footwear your child brings or wears in school is clearly labelled with their name. This makes it much easier to return lost belongings to their owner and helps prevent items from going missing.
