Nursery 2026-27

Welcome to the Nursery class page!

Welcome to the Nursery class page!

We will add to the Nursery Blog throughout the year so please do check back. We regularly update and communicate with parents on Class Dojo too.

Meet the Nursery team:

Nursery timetable:

For children eligible for full time hours, the Nursery day will run from 8:45-3:15 and a packed lunch will need to be provided. Children who do 15 hours per week in Nursery will do a morning session starting at 8:45 and ending at 11:45am. All children can bring their own water bottle in to school each day which they will have access to throughout the day. Please message on Class Dojo if you have any questions.

Our Nursery timetable consists of group time, adult-led acitivites and free flow sessions. Children will be encouraged to access activities both indoors and outdoors during the day. We also have snack time where children sit in groups to have fruit and milk. We start everyday with a discussion about the weather, day of the week, counting who is here today and a story.

Early Years Curriculum.

We have developed the Millfield Curriculum using Statutory Guidance and our school ethos to create the best start for Millfield children.

Our learning is based around seven areas of learning and development, all are important and inter-connected.

These seven areas consist of:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Physical Development

Communication and Language

Literacy

Numeracy

Understanding the World

Expressive Arts and Design

Reading in Nursery

At Millfield we believe that reading is the single greatest joy that you can have and so texts feature heavily in everything that we do.

We endeavour to read with children as often as we can throughout the school day, whether this is shared class reading, books used in literacy, the class story at the end of the day or even a trip down to our new library.

In Nursery, children will bring a book home every Friday and will need to return it by Tuesday the following week if they would like it swapping for a new book. We also choose one child each week to take home Rita, our reading buddy. Rita is a giraffe teddy who comes with a mug, hot chocolate, cookies/biscuits, a suitcase full of story books and a blanket to snuggle up with! We ask that children send photo's of their child reading with Rita from Friday-Tuesday and we enjoy sharing these with the rest of the class throughout the week.

At Millfield, we don't teach children how to read, we create readers.

Books we will read this year in class:

Uniform

It is so important for your child to feel comfortable at school all day. Therefore could you please make sure they have a spare change of named clothes in school at all times. Their clothes will stay in their own box.
The children may get messy, muddy and wet as they always have access to outdoors!

Wednesday is our 'Woodland Wednesday' where children do a morning of outdoor learning. Children can come in their own clothes for this session but please be aware their clothes may get muddy, so nothing brand new! Children will also need a spare change of socks as sometimes wellies slip off or shoes leak. Hats, gloves and scarfs are a great idea for the cooler months aswell as caps and suncream for Summer.

Could you please ensure your child’s name is in every item of clothing worn in school, as this will prevent belongings from getting lost.
