Music
Music
At Millfield, we provide every child with the opportunity to enjoy all aspects of music. Whether this is singing in our weekly singing assembly and choir, learning how to play a musical instrument, performing in one of our productions or even simply appreciating music in class.
Our music curriculum is designed to provide a sequence of concepts showing clear progression of skills and knowledge in Music. We teach a broad range of skills and expose the children to a wide variety of musical genres. Children begin to perform by learning to play ocarinas in Early Years and Year 1. This progresses in Years 2 and 3 as the children learn to play the recorder. In Year 4 children get chance to learn to play the flute or clarinet. Those children who show commitment and perseverance then continue this instrument into Years 5 and 6, or even choose to join our school band!
School Performances:
At Millfield we aim to provide as many opportunities as possible for pupils to perform. We have an Infant and Early Years Christmas production each year as well as a Junior production at least every 2 years. Juniors also have the opportunity to showcase their musical talents at a termly music assembly. We also enjoy performing in our local community and have close links with St James's Church and Knaves Court.
Please see our Choir and Drama page for more information about when Millfield Choir will next be performing.
Whole school projects:
Each term, Years 1-6 take part in a whole-school music project. In Autumn term, each class learns a Christmas song to sing and perform at our Millfield Christmas Concert. In Spring term, we host a genre discovery project where each year group finds out about a chosen genre and presents this to the rest of the school. In Summer term, staff get involved with 'who's that behind the tracks' where each teacher chooses 5 songs, played throughout the week, and children have to guess which teacher has chosen the songs for that week.
Young Voices!
For 2024/2025 we have signed up to take part in the Young Voices concert! Choir will be meeting each week to rehearse songs together so that we can perform at the Resorts World Arena in January 2025... more information on this to come!
Early Years
In the Early Years children study 'Expressive Art and Design' which offers foundational knowledge and skills for the KS1 Music Curriculum. This includes: learning nursery rhymes; listening to and singing familiar songs; listening to music and appraising it linked to feelings; identifying, exploring and creating with musical instruments; composing and performing own songs and dances; listening and responding to music from different countries; listening to different music genre.
