Reading
Reading (Mechanics):
- Phonics in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2
- Monster phonics
- Whole class delivery
- 5 days a week
- 20-30 minute sessions
- Intervention daily for those not on track
- Phonics posters visible in every classroom
- New Monster Phonics display in infant cloakroom
- Sound cards in every classroom to support spelling
Daily Reading (Supported reading):
Nursery/Reception/Year 1/beginning of Year 2:
- Guided reading in small groups
- Monster phonics guided reading sessions
- 3 days a week
- 20-30 minute sessions
- Banded books
- Books contain comprehension questions at the end
- EBooks for home reading
Year 2-Year 6
- Daily reading with the TA/Teacher
- Levelled books from a banded scheme until free reading
- Own reading book chosen from the library, once free reading
- Correct levelling of books checked through counting the number of words on the page that the child cannot read:
“1, 2, 3 – it’s a good book for me. 5 on a page? It’s too hard for my stage.”

Reading comprehension
Nursery/Reception/Year 1/beginning of Year 2:
- Monster phonics guided reading sessions
- Monster phonic books include comprehension questions
- These books are sent home on a Wednesday night for reading at home using EBooks
Year 2-Year 6
- Shared reading 4 times per week.
- Each day the text is shared and a different VIPER covered through questioning
- Wednesday night this book is taken home with a short test to complete for homework
- The Thursday session is to work through the answers to the White Book Wednesday.


Reading Assessments
- Daily reading assessments ongoing in Nursery/Reception
- Reading tests completed regularly from Year 2-Year 6
- A formal reading test is completed 3 times per year (Autumn, Spring and Summer) – to inform future planning
- SEND complete a lower year group test relatable to ability
- Reading age test completed by all SEND
- Phonics screening test completed 3 times per year (2x Mock tests in Autumn and Spring, 1 final assessment in Summer)
Reading for enjoyment
- Class books read by the teacher at the end of the day in all classes
- Class teachers advertise what they are reading on reading posters around school
- Two new libraries that are used all through the day by groups and the community
- KS2 library within school
- EYFS/KS1 library in school community room
Less able and gifted readers
- Reading group for lower ability Year 3 – We meet weekly to read
- Reading group for lower ability Year 4/5 - We meet weekly to read
- Reading group for more able – Weekly book group Year 5/6
- Reading group for more able – Weekly book group Year 3/4
- Intervention daily for those in Year Nursery/Reception/Year 1 who have not achieved that day’s lesson
- Reading volunteers come into school to work with different classes to help catch up children who haven’t read. Currently, we have reading volunteers in each day to work with children.
