Meet Year 1... laugh

Welcome to Year 1!

I hope you have all enjoyed the Easter break. I have enjoyed seeing your photo's of things you have been getting up to on Class Dojo.

As we enter our final term of Year 1 together, we have lots of lovely activities, trips and topics planned. It is going to be a fantastic Summer term!

If you have any questions or queries, please catch me at the start/end of the day or drop me a message on Class Dojo and I will respond as soon as possible.

A few things to remember:

Tuesday - A group go out for Tulip Tuesday in the morning (check dojo for updates).

Wednesday - Swimming in the afternoon. Final day to return homework. Learn-it test!

Thursday - P.E in the afternoon. Children need to come to school wearing the correct P.E kit with earrings removed and long hair tied back.

Friday - Homework goes home, with new learn-it cards, and is to be returned by Wednesday the following week

What better way to end the Spring term than an Easter egg hunt!?

We love junk modelling in Year 1. This week we created a parachute out of items we collected and then tested if our parachute would glide an egg safely to the ground. It's safe to say, we had a 'cracking' time!

After finishing a Literacy unit on 'Wizard of Oz', we had our own Wizard of Oz day with lots of great activities. Look at our fantastic costumes:

Our DT project for Spring term was to build a 'freestanding structure'. We designed, created and evaluated a piece of new playground equipment. Children created swings, slides and see-saws!

On a Monday afternoon, we have a session with our Year 6 reading buddies. We look forward to this each week.

Look at our fantastic World Book Day costumes! We dressed up as a word this year to expand children's vocabulary. We had words such as: paleontologist, ancient and mystical!

Happy Pancake Day Year 1 !

As part of our Geography for Spring term, we were focusing on a different country each week. This week we learnt all about Italy and of course, couldn't do this without tasting some pizza!

We are looking at denominations and value of coins. We had to use our fine motor skills to pick up the coins and then match them to the right cup.

Year One have been using algorithms in their Computing lessons this week to control the bee bots! They made their own maps and had to get the bee bots to a specific place on their map.

We really enjoyed our science demonstration from the Royal Institute of Science this week!

We got time to explore the music room AND got our very own instruments for Year One. We are going to learn how to play the Ocarina!

Star of the Week goes to...

Our Autumn 1 Star's of the Week were...

These children have earnt their Silver Award by gaining 100 house points in Year 1!

These children have earnt their Bronze Award for gaining 50 house points in Year 1 so far!

We love following drawing tutorials to create illustrations. This week we drew a cartoon monster.

Practising our Red Words with magnetic letters.

Year 1 had a visit from the famous Mary Anning this week! Mary Anning told the children all about the fossils she used to collect and inspired some of the children to visit Jurassic Coast!

Year 1 found some fantastic funghi during their Forest Friday trip last week. Mrs Hare looked up the names to them and labelled them for us to have a look at.

We enjoyed some more Dinosaur activities this week and learnt about fossils!

This week we had our first computing session on the laptops in Year 1. We logged on to Purple Mash and made some great creations!

This week's Forest Friday session was used to turn our Halloween pumpkins into bird feeders. We smothered the pumpkin in peanut butter and bird seed! Yum!

Come and join Year 1 on their Dinosaur Hunt around the school grounds... You won't believe what we found!

We had fun making a slider mechanism for our D&T project based on The Gingerbread Man...

Children on this week's Forest Friday spotted a rainbow during their trip to Pipe Hall Woods!

The Scarecrow's Wedding was a great success! Well done and thank you to all children, staff and parents involved!

This week our Maths is building up our fine motor skills and looking at how to represent number 6-10 in other ways. We also practised lining up to take turns on the interactive whiteboard game...

We have learnt about numbers being represented in different ways this week. We also recapped number bonds to 10 and talked about which group has the most.

Year 1 and 2 really enjoy their free flow Topic afternoons. The Topic for Autumn term is Dinosaurs!

Take a look at what we have been up to this week in Year 1 so far...

After learning all about deciduous and evergreen leaves in Science, we decided to do some leaf art!

For our first KS1 parent afternoon, we made chickens out of paper plates to decorate the hall when we have our very own Scarecrow's Wedding inspired by the Julia Donaldson text. We look forward to seeing KS1 parents again next Thursday at 1:30pm!

Our school dog, Mabel, helped celebrate a special birthday this week too!

This week Year 1 featured in a drumming workshop led by Jeff Rich, the drummer from Status Quo!
