Meet the Year 1 Team...

Transition from Reception to Year 1:

Our aim is to ensure that the children experience a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage One. The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception. Learning through play will continue to be an important part of the school day, and the children will gradually be eased into more formal learning as the year goes on so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners.

Swimming and PE:

In autumn term, we will be having weekly Swimming and Outdoor P.E. Skills sessions. Please ensure your child comes with suitable clothes for this: Black jogging bottoms/black shorts, trainers, socks, a black/grey jumper/hoodie and a white t-shirt.

Swimming will be on a Monday afternoon and P.E. will be every Tuesday this term.

For ease, we have suggested that all swimming kits/PE kits are brought into school on a Monday and returned home on a Friday.

* If your child wears earrings, please ensure they come with something they can store these in to prevent losing them during PE/Swimming.

* If your child has long hair, please ensure they bring a hair bobble that day.

Homework:

Homework will be given out on a Friday and will be collected in on a Wednesday, every week. Each time we start a new topic, the children will given a list of optional tasks, linked to our class topic. Weekly homework will be linked to what the children have been learning that week, including their new sounds for RML and a Learn Its for Maths.

Reading:  We aim to read with every child, every day. The text your child has read in school will be sent home each night to allow them to read with an adult. (THIS WILL COMMENCE FROM OCTOBER HALF TERM)

Break and Lunchtimes:

In Year 1, children have a 15-minute break in the morning and afternoon, as well as an hour for lunch. All school dinners are free for KS1 pupils and they will be provided with a morning snack of fruit. Unfortunately, we no longer offer milk to pupils in Year 1, however if children would like to have milkshakes there, will be a weekly charge of £1 that needs to be paid to Mrs Pitchford on a Monday morning.

Lost Property:

We will always do our best to make sure children are reunited with lost items by the end of the school day. The best way to avoid lost property is to make sure every item is labelled with your child’s name. Any items that do not have a name in them, where possible will be reunited with the child and labelled by a member of staff.
